"The mother was arrested on the spot and is currently in detention and being processed."
The mother is expected to make her first court appearance in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. "She faces charges of child neglect and child abandonment," Spies stated.
Spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health Nadia Ferreira has confirmed that the baby – who was admitted to the Knysna Provincial Hospital after she was found abandoned yesterday – is "in a stable condition".
