KNYSNA NEWS - Less than a day after a week-old baby was found abandoned in Green Street in Knysna Central, police tracked down and arrested the mother of the child.
Said Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie; "After consultation with the Knysna Provincial Hospital on admissions in their maternity ward, information obtained took the investigating officer to New Horizons in Plettenberg Bay where they traced the 17-year-old mother of the child.
"The mother was arrested on the spot and is currently in detention and being processed."
The mother is expected to make her first court appearance in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. "She faces charges of child neglect and child abandonment," Spies stated.
Spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health Nadia Ferreira has confirmed that the baby – who was admitted to the Knysna Provincial Hospital after she was found abandoned yesterday – is "in a stable condition".
