KNYSNA NEWS - DA councillor Luzuko Tyokolo has retaken a seat in Knysna Municipality's council, filling the position left vacant by former councillor Julie Lopes.
Tyokolo was sworn in during a special council meeting earlier today, Thursday 29 June.
While he's new to council in this five-year term, he is no stranger of the Knysna Municipality Council.
Tyokolo previously served in the Council as a DA councillor between 2016 and 2021, but did not retain his seat during the 2021 Local Government Elections (LGE).
Tyokolo was however still the DA's fourth proportional representative (PR) choice during the LGE, meaning he would be next in line should any DA councillors resign from council. This is exactly what happened when, earlier this month, Julie Lopes resigned from her PR seat in council and subsequently from the DA too. With a vacant seat in council, the position was officially awarded to Tyokolo earlier today, beginning his second term in council.
"His experience, dedication, and commitment to serving the community make him an invaluable asset to our team," said Jason White, DA Knysna Caucus Chairperson.
"Cllr Tyokolo's return marks a significant milestone for our caucus... We extend our warmest congratulations to Cllr Luzuko Tyokolo and express our sincere gratitude for his willingness to serve once again."
In a social media statement, the municipality's communications team also welcomed Tyokolo back to council.
"Cllr Luzuko Tyokolo, who was sworn in at today's special Council Meeting, is cordially welcomed back. We have faith that he will improve the lives of those in the greater Knysna community given his prior experience in local government issues."
