KNYSNA NEWS - Motorists who speed through the intersection of Holiday Park Crescent and the N2, as well as those who jump the red light, will be faced with a surprise the next time they break the law.
According to Knysna Acting Municipal Manager Johan Jacobs, new red light violation cameras were recently installed on the Main Road (N2) on either side of the N2/Holiday Park Crescent intersection.
"With motorists jumping this red light during peak hours and often at high speed, the installation of these cameras is designed to encourage drivers to obey traffic signals, to increase safety on our streets, and to decrease the potential occurrences of serious and fatal accidents," said Jacobs.
According to Jacobs, the digital cameras are integrated with the traffic signal system and use 3D radar to detect speed and red light violations.
"They record both still photographs and video footage of the vehicle, including the rear licence plate."
He also indicated that this is not a once-off project. "We are committed to improving safety on our streets and the red light camera enforcement programme is a critical part of this effort," he said.
"These types of cameras will also be installed on [the] Main Road near the intersections of Gray Street and Waterfront Drive (east).
"Sedgefield already has such a set of cameras monitoring the traffic lights on the N2, and a new pair will be installed on Kingfisher Drive."
Jacobs urged motorists to exercise caution when using the roads.
"Please use our roads responsibly, drive safely, according to the speed limit, and adhere to all the rules of the road. Everyone deserves to arrive alive - you don't want to be the reason that doesn't happen."
