KNYSNA NEWS - More than five weeks of "nonexistent refuse collection services" has resulted in an unsightly and potentially unhealthy situation at the centre referred to as Sanlam Mall, at the entrance corner of Nekkies just alongside the N2.
It is also where hundreds of people gather every weekend at the sports bar and adjacent bottle store.
“There's a lot of rubbish that accumulates here. A contractor hired by the municipality usually cleans up at least once a week but we haven't seen any cleaners here for the past five weeks, We've heard the contract has been cancelled,” says Francois Jansen, manager at Nekkies Sports Bar.
“It's becoming a serious health hazard. They haven't cleaned the (public) toilets in about a year,” he says, and points out the complete absence of rubbish bins in the immediate vicinity.
“The municipality just stopped providing this service and we're not getting any answers. Something urgently needs to be done about this.”
Weeks of uncollected rubbish is starting to pile up at Sanlam Mall, Nekkies.
A media enquiry sent to the Knysna municipality was not responded to at the time of going to press.
