KNYSNA NEWS - It has now come to light that police have opened a case of perjury against one of the witnesses in the infamous Knysna cocaine trial, The Toledo cocaine bust, nearly four years after Judge Nathan Erasmus delivered his sentence in the case.
The Toledo, the fishing vessel on which 1 716kg of raw cocaine was discovered, in December 2010 anchored at the Knysna Quays.
Police were reluctant to elaborate on this new development, but Captain Malcolm Pojie, spokesperson for the Southern Cape police, on April 7 did divulge that the docket was with the National Prosecuting Authority for a final decision on whether to pursue the case of perjury.
In 2012 Erasmus sentenced the two Chinese men, Xing Chuo Chen (59) and Yu Wei Yau (31) each to 20 years imprisonment, while the registered owner of The Toledo, Shaun Packeraysammy (44), got the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment.
A Capetonian marine engineer Beverley Jones (47) and his assistant Thabiet Adams (41) were acquitted of all charges of possession and/or trafficking in a dangerous and illegal substance, or of being part of an organised crime ring. Another Chinese suspect, Zhi Zhong Lui (52), was also acquitted.
The street value of the cocaine seized in 2010 was R2-billion.
