KNYSNA NEWS - A member of the Knysna Institute of Learning and Teaching (KILT) Moyisi Magalela applauded the Percy Mdala High School at a function held on the 23 January to celebrate the school's outstanding matric pass rate off 80%.
He said that the organisation spends a budget of R21 million per year supporting nearly 1 800 families and 12 500 learners.
A night of fun, laughter and music was enjoyed at the school and principal Nicholas Njozela and the school governing body hosted a thanksgiving ceremony to celebrate the event.
"Cast all your anxieties onto the Lord," was the message of benediction by Reverend Nicolas Mfecane during the ceremony as he paved the way for the head of the school welcomed his guests.
Suzette De Villiers, circuit manager at the department of education in the Western Cape, commended the teachers of Percy Mdala High School for taking time in getting to know the learners. De Villiers added that there was nothing worse than a child being told to study hard when they get to school, but nobody recognises them.
Newly appointed deputy principal Nozuko Tshaka also landed herself a leadership award in attaining a 100% pass mark in English First Additional Language. Tshaka said that she was very proud of her learners in achieving the exceptional results.
"We have extra classes, we get help from the department of education, we always try to be there for our learners so that we know who struggles in order to achieve a 100% pass rate, and in the way that we teach we ensure that we are working towards a quality pass," Tshaka said.
Njozela said the class of 2019, that achieved a pass rate of 82.9 %, "they really did us proud". "I feel over the moon, they did their level best against all odds from socio-economic challenges to family problems and gangsterism, they made it through."
The principal further said that they will use the previous year's matric result as a benchmark to do better in the year 2020. "We have to beat the record," he said.
"There is employment out there for people who study hard and I believe in the saying that if they work like slaves they will live like kings, if they work like kings they will live like slaves."
