Some 25 cross-breed dogs, most of them adopted from the George SPCA, KAWS and other animal shelters, were entered by their creative owners who had to thought of names to identify their dogs' unique 'breed'.
Points were awarded for the originality of the unique name and whether the name is reflected in the dog.
The first prize went to Leslie Fox's dog, Stanley, who was entered as a 'Moerse Boerewors', a name that caused the biggest laughs from the onlookers.
According to Chris Burlock, a spokesperson for the George SPCA, this Unique Breeds Only dog show was inspired by a Costa Rican
high-profile awareness campaign promoting the unique naming of mixed-breeds that resulted in an increase of 1 400& in adoptions there!
Well-known TV and radio personality, author and adventurer, Patricia Glyn, was the judge and the announcer was Susan Garner of Wild Oats, who originally alerted the Garden Route SPCA to the Unique Breeds campaign.
