KNYSNA NEWS - All libraries in the Greater Knysna area will be transitioning to a new database system during June, with the main town library ‘going live’ on June 23, and other branch libraries following on June 24.
During the transition period, the main library will be closed from Monday, June 20 to Thursday, June 22. Other library branches (Leisure Isle, Rheenendal, Masifunde, Karatara, Roedolf Balie, Hornlee, Khayalethu, Sedgefield and Smutsville) will be open to the public on on Friday, June 24.
Both the old and the news systems will run concurrently for about two months for the checking in of returned books issued prior to the changeover.
To prevent interruption of service, library members will be able to take out extra books for an extended period in the weeks leading up to the transition.
"This move will bring our libraries up to date with the most current technology, using software that is proven and implemented successfully both nationally and internationally," said Xola Frans, Knysna head of libraries. "Sita Library Information Management System (SLIMS) is web-based and highly interactive, with public access availability that is easy to use."
SITA is the State Information Technology Association.
"Library staff and management are very excited about this advancement to our service. It will enable us to meet the needs and requirements of our clients with greater speed and a high level of efficacy," added Frans.
"The only effect on the public library patron will be a more efficient and user-friendly service. Your bar-coded library card will still be valid. At libraries previously not automated, computerisation will take place and all members will be issued with a new bar-coded library card.
"We also extend a friendly appeal for your patience and understanding when the inevitable little hiccups arise while we learn; please be guaranteed that the end result will be a quality library service that we can all be proud of," said Frans.
