Education MEC for the Western Cape, Donald Grant and the Head of Education in the province, Penny Vinjevold, visited Pacaltsdorp High School on Monday afternoon to monitor the training for the Eden and Karoo District educators. Training was organised by the Western Cape Education Department.
The CAPS will be phased in over the next three years, starting with Grades R to 3 and Grade 10 in January 2012.
In 2013, CAPS will be implemented in Grades 4 to 9 and Grade 11 and in 2014 it will be implemented in Grade 12.
Penny Vinjevold, Head of Education in the Western Cape, said CAPS would contribute significantly to improving literacy and numeracy performance, with its special focus on reading and using tests.
"CAPS complements our literacy and numeracy strategy perfectly. We are supporting CAPS and the strategy further by investing massively in textbooks and reading books as part of our plan to ensure text-rich classrooms," Vinjevold said.
She reiterated to our district’s teachers her request to national government that her department be afforded the opportunity to distribute our province’s textbooks to the schools. Vinjevold’s aim is that all ne-cessary textbooks are available at school’s when the year academic year starts, i.e. 25 January 2012.
Training for all Grades 1 to 3 Foundation Phase teachers began on Monday, 3 October, and ended on Wednesday, 5 October.
Nearly 2 700 principals and deputy principals of schools with Foundation Phase grades will attend a one day orientation workshop on the CAPS today.
