KNYSNA NEWS - The case of a shop owner who allegedly molested an 11-year-old girl in Khayalethu, Knysna has been postponed.
The accused, represented by his lawyer Carl Jeppe, appeared briefly in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Monday 9 October when public prosecutor Phumlani Gqalangile requested that the matter be postponed to 10 November for further consultations.
Magistrate Zukiswa Thafeni and Jeppe agreed to this.
The shop owner, a Somalian national, was arrested on Sunday 27 August and released on bail the next day.
A few members of the ANC Women’s League were seen outside the court in support of the girl and her family, with the organisation's regional coordinator Titi Gombo commenting, “The reason why you cannot see us in large numbers is because the family were told by a prosecutor that there is no need for them to be here today and that the case will be postponed, so we told some of the people not to come.”
Gombo said they as the ANCWL don’t understand how the accused could be released on bail, adding, ”We believe that although the law might see him as a first-time offender, we strongly believe this is not his first time committing this crime.”
ANCWL regional task team member Nolufele Mbalo vowed, “The women’s league will come in numbers to support the family at the next court appearance.”
