PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Bitou Municipality and other authorities have called on residents to remain calm after calls were made by Kwanokuthula residents for foreign nationals to leave the area.
Notices have been doing the rounds asking foreigners to leave Kwanokuthula, accusing them of taking local jobs, contributing to a drug scourge in the area and trading illegally.
A notice has also been sent out on social media platforms calling for a total shutdown of the area on 1 September and urging all foreigners to leave Kwanokuthula peacefully.
Bitou Mayor Dave Swart has said in a statement that this is concerning. He said the municipality and local police met with residents on Wednesday 24 August to hear their concerns.
There will be a follow-up meeting on Monday 29 August.
“The follow-up meeting will hopefully include representatives of the Department of Home Affairs,” Swart said.
“We ask the community to remain calm until a resolution to this situation can be worked out.”
