KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Municipality officially handed over the Brenton-On-Sea Landfill to B&V Contractors on Monday 14 March, declaring the facility a construction site for a period of an estimated 20 weeks.
According to municipal spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhoudt, operations at the Brenton-on-Sea Landfill ceased during 2016.
A decommissioning licence was issued on 10 December 2014, and a variation waste management licence was issued on 13 July 2018.
The municipality appointed Zutari Consulting Engineers to develop the closure design for the landfill, based on a basic assessment as per the permitted rehabilitation licence, and to obtain approval for the closure design.
Acting Municipal Manager Johan Jacobs said urged residents who made use of the bulk service containers to refrain from doing so.
"Rather make use of the weekly collection service on Mondays for residential properties and Fridays for businesses," he asked.
