PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - South Cape College students at the Bitou campus started protesting over NFSAS funding issues today, Wednesday 24 March.
This after the Bitou Municipality announced earlier this week that it had been trying to avoid such a situation following similar action at other campuses across the country.
Students however started burning tyres and other debris on the campus on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay.
The municipality confirmed that, following meetings with the college management, it established that NFSAS had delayed payment to the institution. This led to students who depend on the funding struggling to pay for accommodation, food and transport.
"This is not a Bitou campus specific problem, but a national crisis,” said Bitou municipal spokesman Andile Namntu.
In an attempt to lessen the impact, the municipality identified 100 students and provided relief to them.
Following meetings with management, the Bitou Municipality resolved that a letter highlighting the issues should be written by the municipality’s director of corporate services addressed to, among others, President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister for Higher Education Blade Ndzimande.
