PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou municipal employees were put through their paces in terms of health and fitness last week when the municipality hosted its annual wellness day.
While it included some fun fitness-related events – from hula hooping and skipping to dancing and DJ challenges – the day, held on Friday 26 April, was designed to create a safe and healthy working environment for municipal employees.
"Creating a safe and healthy work environment is a legal responsibility. Investment in the wellbeing – physically and mentally – of your staff is equally important," municipal spokesman Manfred van Rooyen said.
As part the wellness day, several organisations including medical aids, pension funds, other financial institutions and the health department offered services to municipal employees.
"Improving and managing your personal health and wellbeing starts with knowing your major health indicators: cholesterol, blood sugar blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI) and HIV."
He added that therefore various health organisations offered a range of health tests for municipal employees.
Financial institutions assisted with information on dealing with income, debt, retirement planning and funeral benefits, to name but a few. "These hopefully form part of the hallmarks of a caring employer."
Van Rooyen further said the principle of good human resource management and career development spoke directly to public managers tasked with leading public affairs. He added that it needed to create the type of organisational environment in which human resources can excel.
"Human resource excellence has to necessarily lead to improved service delivery to communities."
