PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Bitou Municipality has launched an investigation after information surfaced that some municipal fuel cards were being used irregularly.
"A short while ago a member of the public brought to my attention possible irregularities involving the filling of private vehicles with fuel using Bitou Municipality petrol cards," said Bitou Mayor Dave Swart.
He said evidence had been provided and it was passed on to the current Bitou municipal manager.
"Together with the governance and compliance manager, the acting municipal manger took swift action and confiscated four petrol cards that are not linked to any particular municipal vehicle."
An investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of the alleged fraudulent use of municipal fuel cards.
The investigation also includes those who are allocated vehicles in the Bitou municipal fleet.
"Action will be taken against any person in the Bitou Municipality that is involved in any irregular or fraudulent activity that wastes public monies entrusted to us to improve our service to the Bitou public," Swart warned.
He encouraged residents and municipal staff to provide any evidence they might have of suspected fraudulent activities so that the perpetrators can be brought to book.
