KNYSNA NEWS - Commemorating the spirit of their fallen activist Victor Molosi, the ANC Southern Cape region has changed its name to the Victor Molosi region, a move that was welcomed at a party conference last weekend.
Molosi was gunned down outside his house in Concordia on 23 July, the same day as his wife Nomonde Molosi's birthday.
When Thando Matika, the secretary of the ANC Duma Nokwe branch in Ward 8 who worked closely with Molosi, proposed the name change during the ANC conference held at George Municipality on Saturday 25 August, not a single delegate opposed the move.
Matika said it is only fair to give their slain comrade Molosi the recognition he deserves. “His leadership was commendable and his quest for uniting the region is praiseworthy. It is an honour well deserved.”
ANC subregion secretary Moyisi Magelela said Freeze, as Molosi was affectionately known, dedicated his life the movement. “His love for his region and its unity was non-negotiable, and renaming the region means that his legacy will live on forever.”
The proposal for the name change was first brought up on 1 August by ANC executive committee member Thandi Mahambehlala during an ANC memorial service for Molosi at Concordia High School when she said that his sudden death had made the organisation weak in the knees.
She quoted Thomas Sankara: "While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.”
She also said the emphasis should be on building unity and restoring the organisation’s reputation. “I don’t know who is going to do that for the Southern Cape – Freeze has left with his smile. As we celebrate and emulate Freeze, we must pick up the spear and continue with the fight.”
