KNYSNA NEWS - About 85 learners took part in the Knysna municipal library services' third annual interschool Spelling Bee competition on Saturday 26 August in the Khayalethu community hall.
This competition, aimed at improving language skills and encouraging reading, included competitors from Grades 4 to 7 participating in IsiXhosa, English and Afrikaans.
Ward 7 councillor Mandla Matiwane highlighted the positive impact it has had on the learners in the past. Mayoral committee member for planning and integrated human settlements, councillor Shakespeare Arends, said the initiative strengthens reading habits at an early age.
"This competition offers the competitors an opportunity to improve their confidence, better their communication and their comprehension."
This year saw the most schools participating thus far. Schools such as Oakhill, Riverwood Primary and two schools from Plettenberg Bay – Kwanokuthula and Phakamisani primary schools – entered for the first time.
These are the Grades 4 to 7 spelling competition winners in the IsiXhosa, Afrikaans and English categories. Primary school learners from Oakhill, Sunridge, Fraaisig, Phakamisani, Chris Nissen, Kwanokuthula, Hornlee, Thembelitsha and Riverwood took part in the event on Saturday 26 August in the Khayalethu community hall.
