KNYSNA | BITOU NEWS - Despite both sub-districts seeing a steady stream of increases in the few weeks, the number of active cases in Bitou and Knysna has dropped this week.
Registrations to receive the Covid-19 vaccine in the Western Cape continue to grow, with 3 008 905 registrations for the vaccine by Monday 23 May. This is 53,61% of the eligible population.
In the Garden Route, a total of 261 996 people have registered for the vaccine, 52,92% of the eligible population.
In Knysna, there has been a total of 36 995 vaccine registrations, which is 64,44% of the eligible population. Bitou has seen a total of 22 774 vaccine registrations, 53,59% of the eligible population.
As of Tuesday 24 May, Knysna had recorded a total of 10 055 cases of Covid-19, of which 9 676 have recovered, 292 have died, and 87 are active cases. The number of new cases in the past week, 52, represents a small increase of 4% (+2) in new cases from the week before.
The active cases however decreased this week, falling by 6,45% (-6).
When the new cases increase but the active cases decrease, it means that the number of new recoveries (58 this week) exceeds the number of new cases.

The recovery rate has risen, up to 96,23% (96,15% last week). The deaths have remained the same.
In Bitou as of Tuesday, 5 907 Covid-19 cases had been recorded, with 5 689 having recovered, 143 having died, and 75 being active cases.
This shows 30 new cases recorded between 17 and 24 May, a decrease of 43,40% (-23).
The active cases have fallen by 20,21% (-19) this week and the recovery rate increased to 96,31% (95,97% last week), while the mortality rate is 2,5%.
The deaths have not increased for the 11th week in a row - the longest such streak seen in Bitou during the pandemic.
