BUSINESS NEWS - With crime becoming more sophisticated, a proactive approach is required. Outeniqua CCTV's Offsite Monitoring and Virtual Guarding can save you money, your livelihood, and even your life by detecting and deterring criminal incidents before any damage or theft occurs.
Outeniqua CCTV Technical Operations Manager Iain MacDonald says offsite monitoring and virtual guarding make use of visual verification using artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning.
Although all cameras that are monitored in the control room stream visuals that are recorded continuously, AI cameras are programmed for highly accurate human and vehicle detection, which send alerts that appear as 'pop-up' alarms to the controllers, removing false alarms and making the service far more effective. "By using these technologies, alarms in the control room do not get missed."
With various technologies now available, including active deterrent cameras, would-be criminals can be dissuaded from vandalising and/or entering premises before they have the opportunity to commit any crime. Active deterrent cameras have a built-in siren with flashing blue and red lights, which would be activated when a human and/or vehicle is detected, depending on site requirements. These cameras facilitate two-way communication. Control room personnel can warn off would-be criminals before they carry out any damage or enter the premises, making CCTV and offsite monitoring a viable and cost-effective solution.
"With the ever-increasing cost of labour, physical guarding is out of reach for many. Virtual guarding is the answer to this, with multiple monitored cameras costing a fraction of the cost of a single guard," says McDonald.
In addition, at many of Outeniqua CCTV's monitored sites, the monitored cameras complement an on-site guard, negating the need for multiple guards. In one particular case, three guards were replaced with monitored cameras, saving the concern tens of thousands of rands per month.
