Our family moved to Knysna recently thinking that it would be a safe & happy environment for my children. As beautiful as Knysna is, my husband and I fear that we have not made the right decision for our family.
One week after we moved into our home, I was chased by a huge male baboon in our driveway, fortunately I was close to my car and was able to call AllSound security. Two baboons were trapped in our house and it placed the security guard and my husband in a very dangerous situation as the troop of over 20 were trying to charge them to assist the animals inside.
AllSound Security had to call another car and this whole situation lasted over an hour. It took over three hours to clean the mess. This was a very dangerous situation but fortunately we moved on. On Sunday 14 October we returned home to our home being completely trashed.
The baboons pulled open a top bathroom window and entered my home and did devastating damage to our family home. The insurance claim is going to be close to R50 000.
My children do not feel safe, they worry that when they go to school the baboons are going to come back and kill our petrified dogs and cats.
These animals are no longer natural animals - they are violent opportunists, they throw their faeces, eat meat and cause mayhem and I can't understand why everyone is waiting for a terrible tragedy to happen before something is done.
What is the solution - how do we make Knysna a safe place to live?
