KNYSNA NEWS - An afternoon filled with song, dance and theatre were the order of the day in the programme of the Leisure Isle Midwinter Matinee. Held on Sunday 11 June, the matinee was not only a celebration of culture but also a fundraiser for Steenbok Nature Reserve.
The event was put together by Doc Caldwell, who was one of the riveting performers of the afternoon matinee.
The idea for a matinee-themed fundraiser came to Doc after he'd discovered a historical artifact in the old Thesen piano, and asked if he would be able to get it moved to Cearn Hall.
"I've been involved in the Leisure Isle community since I retired here three-and-a-half-years ago. I've always found Cearn Hall the most wonderful open hall, perfect for a piano performance," said Caldwell.
The proceeds of the event will go to Steenbok Nature Reserve, and the event raised a total of R2723,50 in support of the beloved Leisure Island park area.
Commencement speeches were given by John Knowles.
The programme included performances from bass baritone Christiaan Snyman who treated the audience to moving renditions of songs from classics such as The Sound of Music and South Pacific, Gillian Poynton-Teggin performed all of the piano arrangements an, Doc Robert Ian Caldwell, performed a few Herman Charles monologues during the afternoon programme, giving guests a hearty laugh.
