In the beginning there was man… and woman… and chaos. No, it's not Genesis. This is Habakkuk - also of the Old Testament - complaining to God about a world gone haywire. And this was written about 2 700 years ago.
I quote:
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralysed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.
Sounds very much like the average South African conversation next to a Sunday braai after church.
And looking at the rest of the world, this lament could pretty much be voiced today by anyone anywhere on the planet.
So, in spite of flower power, Mother Theresa and the SPCA, nothing much has changed.
A shining modern day example of Habakkuk's lament is the election campaign of the two people vying for the most powerful position on earth. When they debate the pair resemble two black mambas in a vicious battle over prey - in this instance the US of A, ie the entire world. And then they dare sugar coat the vitriol they spew with talk about a return to morality?!
On home front, in an ironic twist of fate, our own prez, the honourable Jacob Zuma, was appointed as patron of the Moral Regeneration Movement way back at the turn of the century. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Or rather he he he he he he.
What a joke. According to the movement's own website, in 2002 Zuma boasted in parliament that moral regeneration was taking root at all levels of society. Must have been because of the shining example he set!
But, since Zuma's understanding of morality is more aligned to those of the guys that Habakkuk complains about, and not really what Madiba had in mind when he brought the movement to life, Zuma could very well truly have believed that he was really doing a good job.
It does however seem as if the net is tightening around Zuma, but who will replace him and the Guptas?
99,9% of people who harbour burning political ambitions - like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump - are ruthless megalomaniacs and often not voters' first choice... at least where the democrats are concerned. The Trump supporters just love their man, although the republican leadership seem to be pained by their candidate.
The world has been home to lowlifes like Hitler and co since the dawn of time and have somehow managed to survive against all odds. But today, with nuclear weapons at these twisted leaders' disposal, our luck may just be running out.
If Isis manages to secure nuclear capability and Trump gains access to the red button, we may as well join the prophet of doom on the street corner and start waving placards announcing that the end is nigh.
