KNYSNA NEWS - The first Urban X obstacle trail run took place on Sunday 1 November, with about 300 participants tackling 10 obstacles over 3km spread out across Blackwaters River Lodge and Mashie Golf Course in the Goukamma Valley near Knysna.
The event was the first of three Urban X races set to be held at Blackwaters over the course of the next three months, and attracted participants from far and wide, including Hanlie Signorini - global ambassador of the Spartan Race, one of the world's toughest obstacle course races.
She was joined by colleagues from the SA Sports League, a training facility in George that drills athletes in various forms of physical training but specialising in combat training.
The event was blessed with perfect weather, with not a single cloud in the sky, and a light breeze blowing through the obstacle course to help keep the participants semi-cool. With a 10:00 start, contestants set off in batches, and took on various obstacles ranging from a rope climb, parachute sprints and crawling through mud, to push-ups and star jumps - and even a brief swim in the cool Goukamma River which the participants enjoyed greatly.

No official places were given out on the day, and participants simply took part for the fun and the challenge.
"It was so much fun, and the weather was absolutely phenomenal," Signorini said after the race. "It's great to see this much interest in events like this, and to have people of all ages taking part is wonderful too."
Knysna Mayor Elrick van Aswegen was among the few hundred participants. "It was fantastic, some of it was challenging, but my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed it," he said.
The series of three races is organised by Coyote Events, with the next two taking place on 6 December and 3 January 2021.
