KNYSNA RUGBY NEWS - Titans Women's Rugby Academy's (TWRA) latest star Prelene Pegram has earned herself a call-up to the Springbok Women's training squad for the upcoming test match against Spain in two weeks' time.
Pegram (22) is a born-and-raised Knysna prodigy and Knysna Secondary School alumnus, joining TWRA in 2011 as a part of its inaugural high-school programme U16 squad.
A staple fixture in the Titans setup ever since her debut, Pegram has earned herself a reputation as a hard-hitting loose forward who finds a way through the tightest defences when there seems to be none.
After only a few years in Titans colours, Pegram was selected into the SWD U16 provincial side for the first time in 2013. She would play for the U16 team again in 2014 before joining the U18 team in 2015 and 2016 and finally making her senior debut for SWD last year. Her abilities meant she was naturally part of the SWD EaGirls team which finished second in the 2019 Women's Inter-Provincial B-Division League, having narrowly lost the final against Lions in sudden death, with 105 minutes of rugby needed to bring about the 31-25 result.
Strong performances for both club and province this season, as well as injuries to a number of frontline Springbok Women's players, led to Pegram being called up to the squad for the upcoming test against Spain and becoming the fifth Titans member to play for the Springboks. Pegram's Titans and SWD coach Aschin Klein says he has always seen incredible promise in Pegram's abilities.
"She is a very talented player who has shown leadership abilities and has captained all our age-group teams as well as the SWD provincial age-group teams," Klein said. "All of us at the academy are extremely proud of her and her achievements."
Pegram is one of 31 women called up to the squad by head coach Stanley Raubenheimer, with the squad travelling to Port Elizabeth earlier this week to begin their training for the clash against the Spaniards. Springbok Women will play Spain two weeks from now on Saturday 21 September, at the WJ de Wet stadium in Despatch.
