Update
PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Local gymnastics sensation Leolin Petersen proved her mettle once again when she won triple gold in the final leg of the Madiba Cup series recently.
The 18-year-old Plettenberg Bay Primary School alumnus, who is doing her final year at Framesby High School in Gqeberha, completed the final leg of the series in Gqeberha last week by winning gold for Euro trampoline, synchro trampoline and tumbling.
She also won silver for double mini.
This showing also secured her the title of series winner in tumbling and Euro trampoline.
The Madiba Cup is a series of gymnastics competitions held across the country over three legs. The first took place in Cape Town, the second in Bloemfontein and the final one in Fairview in Gqeberha at Mandy's School of Tumbling and Trampoline.
Perfecting her skills
The latter is Leolin's home club where she spends hours perfecting her skills. A whopping 52 Madiba Cup winners have come from the club.
Leolin is no newcomer to shining in her field. She has a long list of achievements under her belt including being crowned as the senior female trampolinist of the year at Gymnastics South Africa's annual award ceremony earlier this year.
Prestigious event
This was preceded by winning triple gold at the Trampoline Gymnastics SA Cup 2024 and last year making it into the South African team for the Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Championship in the UK, one of the most prestigious events in gymnastics.
It was held in Birmingham in November and Leolin not only competed in the junior category, but was also part of the senior South African team.
