GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Eden Modern Pentathlon Association (MPA) team of athletes fared brilliantly at the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) Biathle and Triathle World Championships this month.
The championships were held in Bali, Indonesia, from 1 to 5 November.
Johan Windt of Mossel Bay and Wanru Haasbroek of George emerged as world champions in their age groups, achieving gold medals.
Biathle is running and swimming combined in one event and triathle is running, shooting with a laser simulator and swimming combined in one event.
There was a mixed running course of sand, grass and asphalt. Some tough sea currents made for a stringent swimming test.
The weather was hot and humid, which also tested the mettle of the athletes.
About 450 athletes from 34 nations competed in the two-format championships, with biathle and triathle mixed relays and individual semi-finals and finals.
With the team medals, the times of the top three athletes per country are combined and then a team placing is determined.
