GEORGE NEWS - Eden Disc Golf will be hosting the third Outeniqua Open Disc Golf tournament at Rooirivierrif in George on Sunday and Monday, 26 and 27 April (Freedom Day).
The Outeniqua Open is the premier national disc golf event in George, attracting top-rated players from across the country to showcase their skills.
The tournament will be played over two completely different 18-hole courses, and the lowest combined par scores will determine the winners in each division. It will be a Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA)-sanctioned event, which allows for this association's members to improve their rankings internationally.
Disc golf tournaments allow for different divisions so that all levels of players can play in a division that is suited to their skill levels.
The course at Rooirivierrif has three different tee positions at varied distances, depending on the player divisions: pro, intermediate and novice.
This allows for differently skilled players to play on the same cards - which enables all new players to learn the skills of the game quickly - and provides a family outing that everybody can enjoy.
With the support of Disc Golf SA, as well as permission from the George Municipality, Eden Disc Golf has developed the Rooirivierrif course into a world-class free-to-play venue in one of the most picturesque locations in South Africa. It is the only free-to-play disc golf course in South Africa that is available for anybody to enjoy.
The sport utilises an app, called Udisc, which is available on app stores and has all the available layouts to guide new players through the course and keep track of score statistics. While it has one of the most active junior divisions in South Africa, all ages are encouraged to join and try it out.
All you need is a frisbee, and a phone to guide you through the layouts. From there, Eden Disc Golf can guide interested players on how to obtain disc golf discs, which are specifically weighted and shaped to allow for different shape shots depending on the throwers' skills.
There are over 17 000 courses and an estimated four million players worldwide. South Africa had its first player representing at the world championships in 2025 in Finland, and the DGSA will be hosting the first Africa Disc Golf Championship in November.
Outings can be arranged for groups of new players, and equipment as well as facilitators for company team-building outings can even be provided.
