FOOTBALL NEWS - Vista Football Club kept their Geolfa title hopes alive when they sank Heaven Stars 3-1 in a highly anticipated game on Saturday afternoon, 9 July at the Lawaaikamp Stadium.
The goals were netted by Kwanele "Shoes" Tom and Mawande Msilelwa (2) for Vista, and Asenathi Gamana for Heaven Stars.
Vista are second on the log table with 66 points after 29 fixtures, with 20 victories, six draws and three defeats, breathing down the neck of Black Cats (67) and one fixture remaining. It seems that the Geolfa League champions will be decided in the very last game of the league.
Vista set the tone for the game by launching the first attack. Mawande Msilelwa tried for goal, but his shot went wide. Throughout the first half Vista seemed to have the upper hand with Kwanele "Shoes" Tom and Mawande Msilelwa taking the lead from the centre of the field.
An attempt by Wandile Mbholodi was saved by Heaven Stars goalkeeper Siphosihle Ranelo and it was Tom who later scored the opening goal. Heaven Stars tried to come back and were awarded a free kick outside the box, but it was cleared away.
Vista were leading 1-0 into the interval. Neither team was clinical enough in front of the goal causing both to miss a number of clear-cut chances.
The second half initially saw Heaven Stars playing a more prominent game with Malibongwe Daphula and Musa Sitofile attacking very strongly on the flanks. However, after Mawande Msilelwa of Vista scored the second goal for Vista (from a free kick on the right side of the field), the game was back in Vista's court.
They launched strong attacks with Thando Thombela and Mawande Msilelwa on the wings and Msilelwa scored his second goal to make it 3-0. Heaven Stars put in a gigantic effort in the last minutes of the game and managed to score courtesy of Asenathi Gamana, who locked the final score on 3-1 for Vista.
