FOOTBALL NEWS - After the conclusion of the second round of fixtures in the 2021/22 KLFA Domestic League season, Pine Stars are sitting top of the table.
The new season of the Knysna Local Football Association's (KLFA) top division of amateur club football officially kicked off last month, with the first round of games on 20 and 21 November.
The first weekend saw Pine Stars and Flamingo emerge on six points each and thus tied at the top, with the former taking top spot by virtue of goal difference. Young Chiefs were in third place with four points.
The second round of fixtures was scheduled for Sunday 28 November, with seven games to be played between Loerie Park and the fields in Rheenendal. Young Boys, Smuts United, Young Stars, as well as league newcomers La Liga, would all be playing their first games of the season.
The past weekend kicked off with games being played concurrently at the two grounds at 09:30. In Rheenendal Pine Stars beat Young Boys 2-1 while Young Chiefs edged out Voota 4-3 at Loerie Park. La Liga have made their way into the league through purchasing now defunct club African Roots' KLFA Domestic League license.
Their first match in the league was against 2020/21 third-placed side Young Stars in Rheenendal, which they lost 2-1. Meanwhile, at Loerie Park, last season's fourth-placed side Smuts United got their 2021/22 season off to a solid start with a 3-1 victory over African Eagles.
In a battle of the "young" sides in Rheenendal, Young Stars and Young Boys played out to a 2-2 draw. The final game of the day in Rheenendal was played between Pine Stars and La Liga, with the log leaders winning 3-1.
At Loerie Park the last match of the day was played between Richmond City and Smuts United, which the latter won again by a 3-1 scoreline.
Following the conclusion of the weekend's games, Pine Stars are five points clear at the top of the table with 12 points. Young Chiefs lie second with seven points, Smuts United third with six, and Flamingo fourth with six.
