"Although the Knysna Night League faced some pretty harsh decisions in the last few years, it is back, and yes, with a bang!" said Peter Heyns of the Knysna Cricket Club.
A total of ten cricket teams compete for the Cretchley Cup: The Raggies, Bradach Manor Bruisers, Kanonkop Kings, Exuse Me Barmen, Etana Reds, The Lords, Municipality, Night Express, Skybound Plett Pinchers, and Mozambique Express.
"Keeping the social focus of this tournament clearly in mind, the cricketers of Knysna decided it would be good to add two more teams. These two teams were identified and approached out of cricket developing areas," explained Heyns.
A joint school team as well as a cricket academy team were added to the 2011 list of participants.
Heyns said that league’s aim was not only to expose younger cricketers to the game, but also those already playing for clubs and more professional levels of cricket.
He said that hard work was put into arranging the whole tournament, and despite the difficult economical reality, sponsors agreed to assist because the game and its development were important to them.
All the cricketers and sponsors enjoyed a festive opening ceremony before the first match between Bradach Manor Bruisers and Mozambique Express on Monday, October 3.
The Bradach Manor Bruisers won this match by 64 runs. During the opening ceremony, the two new teams, Etana Reds and Kanonkop Kings both received brand new T-shirts sponsored by Etana Insurance in George and Kanonkop Guest House.
"We would sincerely like to thank all of those who made this year’s tournament possible," said Heyns
The last match will take place tonight, Thursday, October 6 at 18:30 Loerie Park.
"Come on Knysna, bring your family, pick a team and support cricket development in Knysna," invited Heyns.
