Elgar survived an lbw review, but succumbed to a hard return catch to spinner Moeen Ali. Kuhn, well, will count himself unfortunate in being caught down the leg-side, while Duminy's familiar failings on the pull were all too evident.
The post-tea period saw Ali and leftarmer Dawson operate wonderfully in tandem. The former's drift and turn complemented the latter's bounce and curvature superbly. The veteran Hashim Amla, promoted Quinton de Kock, diminutive Temba Bavuma and inexperienced Theunis de Bruyn had few to no answers for Ali's advances, in particular.
Allrounder Vernon Philander and tail-enders Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel tried to orchestrate some late defiance, but to no avail. The 30-year-old Ali completed a telling six-for - and ultimately secured a remarkable Man of the Match haul of 10 for 112, supported by his commanding half-century in the first innings.
"Moeen put in a fabulous performance, a great game," Root told BBC Radio's Test Match Special. "His innings was fabulous and he put the ball in consistently good areas."
