NATIONAL NEWS - A trail has certainly been blazed in lane eight of the Olympic track – the one from which Wayde van Niekerk set that blistering world record in the 400m on Sunday night.

And 400m hurdler LJ van Zyl could still feel the heat of it today.

“Lane eight where I just ran now is still hot from last night from the fire on it – I can still feel the energy on the track. What a fantastic performance it was,” said Van Zyl after finishing second in his heat in 49.12 seconds on Monday to safely make it through to Tuesday’s semifinals.

“All our apartment blocks were so excited last night for Wayde. I think everybody couldn’t sleep last night.”
