‘Card swopping’ is the most common form of this type of fraud, where suspects target ATM users.
Sabric’s Kalyani Pillay says criminals use various methods to "manipulate and distract ATM users" to gain access to their bank cards and PIN numbers.
“We have been seeing card swooping for many years. But certainly in recent times we’ve seen a greater prevalence of it where perpetrators are actually going up to the ATM and while bank customers are doing their transactions they offer assistance.”
Pillay says criminals often manipulate ATM machines, like changing the language on the screen, to get users to seek help from them.
