Garden Route and Klein Karoo weekend weather: Rain on the coast, warmer conditions inland

GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - After a cold and wet start to Friday, residents across the Garden Route and Klein Karoo can expect a mixed bag of weather this weekend, with cloud, showers and rain remaining possible along the coast while temperatures rise significantly inland.

The latest forecasts suggest that Saturday, 19 September, and Sunday, 20 September, will not bring uniform conditions across the region.

While coastal areas could see periods of rain, parts of the Klein Karoo may enjoy considerably warmer conditions.

The uncertainty is mainly around how much rain will actually fall. Current forecasting sources continue to differ on rainfall totals and timing, particularly for Saturday and Sunday.

George: Cloudy with rain in the mix

For George, the weekend is looking mostly cloudy, with the possibility of light rain.

Saturday is expected to remain overcast, with temperatures reaching the mid-to-high teens, while Sunday brings a greater chance of light rain and slightly milder conditions.

One current forecast puts George at around 17°C on Saturday and 19°C on Sunday, while another predicts a cooler weekend and only limited rainfall.

The variation between forecasts is a useful reminder that rainfall amounts remain difficult to pin down at this stage.

Knysna and Plettenberg Bay could stay damp

Further east along the Garden Route, the outlook remains similarly unsettled.

The Garden Route National Park forecast shows a continued chance of rain around Knysna, with Saturday remaining cool and cloudy and Sunday also carrying a chance of rain.

Plettenberg Bay is also expected to remain cloudy, with showers possible over the weekend.

One current forecast puts the probability of rain at around 90% on both Saturday and Sunday, although predicted rainfall amounts remain relatively modest.

For anyone planning a coastal outing, it may therefore be worth keeping a rain jacket close - even if the day starts out looking promising.

Mossel Bay and the western Garden Route

The western side of the Garden Route may see somewhat different conditions, with the influence of the coastal weather system varying from place to place.

The broader Garden Route forecast continues to indicate a mixture of cloud and possible showers, but the exact timing and intensity remain uncertain.

This is where the weather models are still disagreeing: some are showing relatively little rain, while others suggest considerably wetter conditions in parts of the region.

Klein Karoo: a very different weekend

Cross the Outeniqua and other mountain passes into the Klein Karoo, however, and the weather story changes.

Oudtshoorn is expected to warm considerably, with Saturday forecast to reach the low 20s and Sunday potentially climbing towards the upper 20s.

Rain remains possible, particularly from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, but some forecasts are considerably drier than others. One current forecast predicts only light rain, while another is showing a much higher risk of thunderstorms and heavy rain over Sunday.

The latest forecast therefore suggests that Oudtshoorn could be warm and cloudy before showers develop, rather than experiencing the cold, consistently wet conditions expected closer to the coast.

What about Calitzdorp and Prince Albert?

The further north and inland you go, the more variable the weekend picture becomes.

The Klein Karoo is likely to experience considerably warmer daytime temperatures than the Garden Route, but isolated showers or thunderstorms remain possible as the weekend progresses.

For Calitzdorp and Prince Albert, residents and visitors should therefore keep an eye on updated forecasts, particularly if travelling through the mountain passes or planning outdoor activities.

At this stage, there is not enough consistency between forecasting sources to attach a specific rainfall total to the entire Klein Karoo.

The weather story to watch

The biggest takeaway from the latest forecasts is that the Garden Route and Klein Karoo may experience two very different versions of the same weekend.

Along the coast, expect more cloud, cooler temperatures and a reasonable chance of showers or rain.

In the Klein Karoo, temperatures should climb, with sunshine and cloud potentially giving way to afternoon showers or thunderstorms.

And while some forecasts suggest a worthwhile soaking could develop in parts of the region, others remain much more conservative.

So, for now, the sensible advice is simple: keep the umbrella and rain jacket handy on the coast, but don't put away the sunscreen if you're heading into the Klein Karoo.

One thing the weather gurus do seem to agree on is that spring has arrived - but it hasn't quite decided what personality it wants to show us this weekend.
