GEORGE MOTORING NEWS & VIDEO - Eager to learn how MasterCars George goes about selecting the cars it sells, and manage to live up to its pledge of high-quality vehicles, I recently visited the MasterCars showroom in Knysna Road.
I was welcomed by sales manager Hugo van Jaarsveld, who invited me to his office where sales executive Carlu Pienaar joined us. Both answered my questions with ease and without any hesitation.
Quality check
MasterCars George is the Tavcor Group's division for high quality pre-owned Volkswagens. To be a MasterCar, a vehicle must be less than five years old and have less than 120 000 kilometres on the clock. It is imperative that the vehicle had not been in an accident and that it has a full Volkswagen service history.
All the vehicles undergo a thorough 80-point test as soon as they are traded in. Their mileage is verified and they are put on a lift, where every part is scrutinised during a full integrity check that includes checking for accident damage.
Professional vehicle reconditioning is done on aspects such as bumpers, body work, chassis and the interior.
The MasterCars George staff will help you select a VW perfectly suited to your needs and budget. From left are Mandi Stolz, Hugo van Jaarsveld, Ronnie Moshabi, Andile Xelegu and Carlu Pienaar.
Pienaar assured me that a vehicle will be as good as new when you buy it from MasterCars - just with a better price and a little more mileage.

A MasterCars vehicle comes with a warranty, based on the mileage and the year model. The MasterCars warranty covers the exact components that the factory warranty covers and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. What I saw and heard reassured me that customers can enjoy peace of mind when they purchase a vehicle from MasterCars.

Testing, testing
Of course, I wanted to experience the cars first hand and chose two cars on the spot, without any prior arrangement with the staff.
I started with a 2017 Golf GTi 7.5 DSG hot hatch with only 22 000km on the clock. The interior looked and smelled like a new vehicle.
The GTi that I test drove delivers 169kW and 350Nm of torque and can go from 0 to 100km/h in only 6,2 seconds.
You can also set your ride to the comfort level you desire. The price tags of the GTis on the floor vary from R400 000 to R550 000, depending on year and mileage.
After my spin in the GTi, I tried out a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder Volkswagen Up, which was selling for R144 900. What a beaut! It looked like new and the interior was spotless - and bigger than I expected. The Up also had a deeper boot than most vehicles in its class.
The 55Kw vehicle was nippy and the ride comfortable. A pleasant surprise was the very low fuel consumption of around 4,6 litres per 100km on the open road. Another bonus is the annual service cost of only R1 400 to R1 800.
At the end of the day I was very impressed with the friendly staff and the vehicles I drove.
If you are in the market for a Volkswagen, but your budget is too tight for a new vehicle, visit MasterCars. They are certain to have a pre-loved vehicle that will tickle your fancy.
