KNYSNA NEWS - Nine-year-old Jamie Freislich from Knysna Primary proved last Saturday that community spirit has no age limit when he raised R7 000 for the Western Heads Volunteer Wildfire Response Unit (WHVWRU) in Lake Brenton.
Together with his mother Robyn and friend Julia van Zyl, they baked and sold more than 200 pancakes.
The unit, whose mission it is to protect lives and property on the western Heads by responding speedily to fires, needs a shipping container to safely store its growing range of firefighting equipment.
The profit from the fundraiser will go directly towards the WHVWRU's shipping container fund.
While the WHVWRU's primary role is to extinguish or contain fires until professional firefighters arrive on scene, the unit also assists professional firefighting teams when required.
Members of the WHVWRU praised Jamie's initiative, saying his contribution not only launched the shipping container fund, but also served as a reminder that compassion and altruism remain alive and well among the younger generation.
"The WHVWRU salutes Jamie," the organisation said.
