Every year kykNET's Afrikaans actuality programme, Kwela tries to uncover the country's best kept secrets in terms of small towns - with less than 500 000 residents - and this year Plett is in the running.
During the first round the public was asked to vote for their favourite towns in South Africa via SMS. After thousands of votes, Kwela named the top three nominees in each of the nine provinces.
Along with the coveted title, the winning town will also receive a R1-million marketing campaign from kykNET. Homebrew Films, the producers of Kwela, will also film a 30 second advert about the town which will be broadcast on kykNET.
A massive party will be held in September in honour of the winning town.
Plett Tourism spokesman, Patty Butterworth said the reason Plett was worthy of the title was because the town had a mix of different cultures, faces and personalities which gave it a unique and interesting character. "As a tourism town, we are on par with any other premium destination in the world as a premier leisure destination with unique and world-class tourism products. We think this is a wonderful opportunity and are hoping for the best," Butterworth said.
Previous winners include Graaff-Reinet, De Rust, Sabie and Fouriesburg.
