PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Sixteen construction workers were injured in an early morning accident in Plettenberg Bay yesterday, 6 November.
Police spokesman Captain Marlene Pieterse said a white Hyundai mini truck was transporting workers to a building site in Beacon Way when the accident took place.
She added the truck turned into Beacon Way from the N2 at about 07:45 when it suddenly overturned and landed on its side.
It is still unknown how the accident happened.
“There were 16 workers on the truck. Some of them were seriously injured and were transported to the clinic in Kwanokuthula and the Knysna Provincial Hospital for treatment,” Pieterse said.
She added the 26-year-old driver did not have a valid driver’s licence or a permit to transport people.
“A fine was issued for driving without a licence. The drive was not arrested, but a case of reckless and negligent driving is under investigation.”
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Plettenberg Bay station commander Marc Rodgers said their medics responded to a report of a vehicle accident with multiple injured passengers.
“Our NSRI medics assisted patients on the scene and the police, traffic services, Med-Life ambulance services, Western Cape government health EMS and Bitou fire and rescue services also responded.”
He added that at least 14 patients were treated for injuries ranging in severity and all patients, in stable conditions, were then transported to hospitals by ambulances.
