OPINION PIECE - We've all done it. Looked at an item in-store that we wouldn't normally buy because it's a luxury, and then decided, "You know what, stuff it, I deserve it."
But now, under lockdown, spoiling yourself has taken on a slightly different meaning.
Before lockdown, granting yourself that little luxury would normally come in the form of a nice, expensive chocolate (probably Toblerone, Ferrero Rocher or Lindt) because you haven't had one in what feels like ages.
Or maybe in the form of a nice tart or cake at the shop, a good bottle of wine instead of the usual box wine because your child's been getting on your nerves a little more than usual (no judgement, moms and teachers, we understand, they can drive anyone crazy on the right day).
These days we can't get wine (legally), however, so that option is already out the window (sorry moms and teachers, I know online teaching/homeschooling is a drag). Which leaves you with one of the other two.
But only if you're lucky, that is, because anyone in Knysna who's decided to spoil themselves with a choccy of late, will have likely been disappointed as it seems everyone has had a hankering for chocolate (that and pineapple, I wonder why). At the start of lockdown, people stockpiled toilet paper (anyone really figured out why yet?), but now it would appear as if Knysnarians are stockpiling chocolate and pineapples, and not just the expensive choccies, but the normal ones too.
Of course, not everyone chooses to spend money on chocolates, because some are smarter about their financial expenditures or some are slightly stricter with their diets, so how does the spoiling go during lockdown? Well, for starters, I think we've all truly spoiled ourselves with a few more minutes of sleep before reporting for work duty at home at least a handful of times. Or, perhaps, you've opted to not wear pants at all during the day because hey, who's going to see you? (Well, no one, except for the man/woman in the mirror.)
Maybe you've decided to spoil yourself by driving a bit slower when going out to do your essential shopping so as to savour every moment you can be outside the house, or perhaps you jog a bit slower than usual in the mornings to enjoy the fresh air a bit more (I like to use this excuse to feel better about my unfitness). I personally prefer the chocolate option though, because hey, it's chocolate.
So, whatever tickles your lockdown fancy, be sure to spoil yourself just that little bit before lockdown ends and we go back to a "normal" life again.
