KNYSNA NEWS - A group of local women who are members of the NPO Vroue in Nood recently made a couple's wedding dream come true.
The group of committed women, led by NPO chairperson Sharon Swartz, work tirelessly in their respective communities to support women and children affected by gender-based violence.
Their efforts include providing assistance and guidance, and making referrals to organisations including the SAPS, Department of Social Development, Department of Culture and Sport, among others.
Recently, Vroue in Nood learnt about Mario Vaaltyn (58) and Rita January (50), a couple who wished to marry, but were prevented from doing so due to financial obstacles.
The NPO's members then rallied together, taking on the task of planning and organising the couple's wedding.
Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of various sponsors, Mario and Rita were able to celebrate their official union in a beautiful and memorable ceremony.
Dated for eight years
The love birds had dated for eight years before they were able to tie the knot.
Mario told the Knysna-Plett Herald that he had the classic "love at first sight" experience when he first laid eyes on his wife.
"I'll never forget the day, that's for sure. We met in the Flenters neighbourhood, and when I saw Rita that day, my body twitched for half a second.
"Every fibre of my being told me 'this is the woman' for me. When I approached her, I was a bit nervous at first, but once my tongue loosened up a bit and the conversation began to flow, it felt like we'd known each other for years," he said.
Very emotional
Rita says her wedding day was very emotional, because it had exceeded her expectations in every way.
"Mario and I had talked about marriage a few times before, but we both gave up on our dream because financially it was just not possible for us, which is why we decided to move in together as unofficial man and wife. The wedding cakes were eye-catching, and a sumptuous treat.
"Having said that, it sure does feel extremely good to be married on paper, and in the eyes of God and the community.
"We will be eternally in debt to Vroue in Nood for organising our special day."
Both were of the opinion that their respective families' blessings and attendance at the wedding meant the world to them.
Love language
"We both have grown kids from previous relationships, and they fully supported us from the jump. I think it's clear for everyone to see that we complement each other very well.
"Mario is a very chilled guy and when we have a disagreement, we sort it out quickly, before you know it. Our own love language thing to do, is to playfully pinch each other from time to time to make our displeasure known, which rarely happens.
"I feel truly blessed to call Mario my husband, for the way that he loves me. He ain't going nowhere, he is mine," Rita said while smiling at Mario.
