KNYSNA NEWS - In a colourful show of solidarity against cancer, residents recently gathered at the Knysna Waterfront for a shavathon held at Food Lover's Market.
Organised by Irmela Pakendorf, the event drew residents from across the area, all eager to make a visible show of solidarity.
Participants either shaved or sprayed their hair in bright colours - a symbolic gesture that has become synonymous with raising awareness and support for cancer patients and their families.
Pakendorf described the turnout as encouraging, stressing the importance of community-driven initiatives in highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by those battling the disease.
Some of the participants who opted for a spray rather than a shave, described the experience as deeply moving.
"Standing there and spraying my hair was a humbling moment. Cancer touches so many lives, and even if we don't always see the full impact, we know the struggle is real. This was my way of showing support, of saying to those affected that they are seen and not alone," a participant said.
Preventative measures and early detection
Beyond awareness, health professionals continue to emphasise that many cases of cancer can be reduced through preventative measures and early detection.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, limiting alcohol intake and avoiding tobacco remains key in lowering risk. Regular screenings and check-ups are equally vital, as early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes.
Vaccinations, including those that protect against virus-related cancers, and reducing prolonged exposure to harmful environmental factors, are also important steps in prevention.
Community education and support initiatives play a crucial role in encouraging individuals to take proactive steps towards their health.
The event also reinforced the continued efforts of the Rotary Club of Knysna, whose involvement helped drive awareness and community participation.
