KNYSNA NEWS - For more than a century, Elisabeth Moodie – or Ouma Moodie as she was fondly known – had been impacting people's lives with her positive attitude and caring heart. It is no wonder, then, that her family was expecting more than a thousand people to pay their respects.
Moodie, who was as far known the oldest Southern Cape resident, passed away on Wednesday evening 23 October after celebrating her 109th birthday in September.
Right until the end, Moodie was healthy and proud of the fact that she never went to the doctor, took chronic medication or wore spectacles.
Her youngest daughter, Linda Patterson, said her mother passed away surrounded by loved ones, choir song and prayer. "This meant a lot to her as she absolutely loved praise and worship as her faith was very important to her," Patterson said. During her birthday celebrations the previous month, Moodie said that her belief in God was part of her secret to longevity – that, and not drinking or smoking.
"Some choir members visited us on Wednesday and sang a few songs. Thereafter we prayed and thanked the Lord for blessing us with her [Moodie]. After the prayers she just closed her eyes and did not wake up."
Patterson said her mother was an amazing person who cared for everyone who crossed her path. "Her door was always open to anyone who needed help. She leaves a very big void in many people's lives."
A traditional Griekwa funeral was held in Kranshoek on Sunday 3 November where there were, among others, a guard of honour and choir song.
