Jan Maré (12) moved to Plett with his family in December 2010. He is a Grade 7 learner at Plettenberg Bay Christian School, and previously attended Hatfield Christian School where he was awarded colours for academic achievement as well as general knowledge.
Maré has been taking photos for almost five years now. According to his father, he has been interested in photography since the age of five, although he got his first camera when he was eight years old. He was National Geographic’s Young Photographer of the Year in 2008 with his photo ‘Waterhoenderresies’, and is once again a finalist in 2010 with his picture of a young Pale Chanting Goshawk, captured as the bird took flight in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park.
"This is a technically superb picture that would hold its own in any adult level bird photography competition," said the judges of the 2010 National Geographic Kids Young Photographers’ competition.
Maré has won certificates of merit on two occasions at national and international level in photographic competitions hosted by the Photographic Society of South Africa. Being open competitions, he held his own against predominantly adult competitors.
He loves fishing, swimming and traveling. Being in nature is his favourite way to relax.
A creative young man, he is particularly interested in engineering as a potential career.
