KNYSNA NEWS - Close to 250 children turned out for the annual Leisure Isle Park Hunt on Saturday 4 April for a day of adventure, nature and community spirit.
Thanks to the generosity of locals, children from Nekkies and Hornlee could attend the festivities free of charge.
Danella Dolan, owner of the charming More shop and the event's main organiser, described the Park Hunt as "a wonderful, vibey experience where kids and their parents can connect with nature".
She said while Easter eggs added to the fun, that wasn't the real purpose. "It's not just about handing out treats," Dolan said. "It's about making children aware of the island's unique parks and natural beauty, and providing a safe space to explore and connect with nature."
The treasure-hunt-style event followed a 2km route starting at More, winding through Church Square,
The Grove, Bowden Park, and the wilder side of Kensington Gardens, and ending at the Seed Pod in Steenbok Park.
At each stop, children discovered simple, fun activities and chocolate eggs. Volunteers, residents and Knysna Montessori School students were on hand to ensure their safety. The final stop offered a sweet photo moment and a small toy to celebrate the end of their adventure.
Along the way, refreshments kept participants hydrated, and one station at More revealed a lucky number for a chocolate and fruit hamper draw.
Dolan paid tribute to the Leisure Isle community for their support. "This event is created purely by volunteers and the generosity of local residents," she said. Ticket sales are intended to cover only essential costs such as printing and refreshments, and any proceeds are shared between Steenbok Nature Reserve and the 40 residents of Vermont Old Age Home in Hornlee.
"Last year, we were able to put together 40 care packages for Vermont residents and make a donation to Friends of Steenbok," Dolan said. "This year, we've raised more than R7 000 to share between Steenbok and Vermont - keeping the benefit right here in Knysna, for Knysna."
With numbers up from 180 children last year and a target of 300 for 2027, the Leisure Isle Park Hunt continues to grow as a highlight of the Easter season.
