RHEENENDAL NEWS - Residents of Le Roux Street say prolonged road resurfacing work has disrupted access to their properties, created hazardous conditions and left them struggling to find parking close to their homes.
In a written complaint to the municipality, resident Glane Phillips said the situation had deteriorated over the past three months, with ongoing construction creating daily challenges for residents.
Phillips said the roadworks had left parts of the street in a compromised and potentially dangerous condition, with deep trenches and obstructions along street boundaries affecting pedestrian and vehicle access. “With the new road construction work currently in progress, the current conditions are posing serious daily challenges for residents,” Phillips wrote.
The complaint states that residents are concerned about losing proper access to their yards as construction progresses, while some are already struggling to find parking spaces within a reasonable distance of their homes.
Phillips called on the municipality to investigate the situation urgently, provide clarity on the project timeline and take steps to ensure safe access to properties and adequate parking arrangements during construction.
Municipality responds
Acting municipal manager Dr Richard Martin said the municipality had established formal procedures for lodging and addressing complaints and project-related queries.
He said any concerns should first be reported to the relevant community liaison officer (CLO). If the complainant does not receive a satisfactory response, the matter should be escalated to the relevant ward councillor, who can refer it to the accounting officer.
The accounting officer will then liaise with the relevant implementing department to obtain the necessary information and ensure an official response.
“The media is not the municipality’s complaints-handling channel,” Martin said.
He said the matter had already been reported and was being attended to through the established official channels.
