KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna High School is among 17 schools across the Western Cape taking part in the Western Cape Blood Service’s (WCBS) annual Week of Warriors campaign from 27 to 31 July, aimed at boosting blood stocks and inspiring more young people to become lifelong blood donors.
The campaign seeks to recruit 1 500 new youth donors during the current financial year while helping to ease the seasonal pressure on blood supplies during the winter months. Participating schools will each host an on-site blood donation clinic during the week.
According to the WCBS, young donors are the future of blood donation. “If we want to secure a stable blood supply for years to come, we need to invest in growing our youth donor base now. These learners are showing incredible leadership by choosing to give back to their communities and help save lives,” said WCBS spokesperson Marike Carli.
Other participating schools include George High School, Hoërskool Outeniqua, Bergvliet High School, Westerford High School, Paarl Vallei High School, Worcester Gymnasium, Curro Century City and several others across the province.
The WCBS encourages all eligible members of the public to donate blood. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 75, weighing at least 50kg, in good general health and leading a safe sexual lifestyle may be eligible to donate. A blood donation takes about 30 minutes, and donors can give blood every 56 days.
