KNYSNA NEWS - Four suspects, three men and one woman, remain in custody following their third appearance in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder related to the vigilante-style killing of 28-year-old Athinkosi Jonas.
Jonas’ body was discovered on 1 August in the Nekkies area with multiple injuries. He was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. All four suspects were arrested the same day and made their first court appearance on 4 August.
During today’s brief court appearance, the matter was postponed to 20 August to allow the state and defence to verify the alternative residential addresses of the accused, should bail be considered. The state has confirmed it will oppose any bail application.
The case has sparked widespread outrage in the Knysna community. On 13 August, residents took to the streets demanding justice for Jonas and calling for no bail to be granted, particularly to the female accused. A number of petitions opposing bail were also signed by both community members and Jonas’ family.
