Update
KNYSNA NEWS - A 65-year-old man is expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrate's Court tomorrow, Thursday 5 March, following his arrest on charges of attempted murder and drunken driving.
In a police statement, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, spokesperson for the Garden Route District Corporate Communication and Liaison Services, said Knysna Police registered the case after the man was arrested at about 22:00 yesterday evening, 3 March, along the N2 near Buffalo Bay.
"Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused allegedly disobeyed a red traffic signal and sped off in full view of traffic officers on duty, who then gave chase. The suspect was eventually stopped and pulled over at a parking area, where he reportedly drove in circles. When one of the traffic officers approached the vehicle to request the driver’s licence, the accused allegedly sped off again, with traffic officials and police members in pursuit. The suspect later lost control of his vehicle, which left the N2 near Buffalo Bay. During the incident, a traffic officer sustained injuries and was transported to a medical facility for treatment," the statement says.
The man was arrested on the scene and remains in custody.
The police investigation continues.
