KNYSNA NEWS - Police have confirmed that additional charges may still be added as the murder investigation into the death of 39-year-old Velia Angelique Strydom continues.
An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death has been conducted, but the final report is still outstanding.
“The outstanding autopsy report forms part of the murder investigation. More charges could be added as the investigation unfolds,” said Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies.
First court appearance
A sombre atmosphere filled a packed Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Monday 5 January as family members, friends and members of the Hornlee community gathered for the first court appearance of murder accused Mervyn Bock (40).
Bock was arrested following the death of his girlfriend, Velia Strydom, whose body was discovered on 12 December in bushes near the Red Bridge area outside Knysna.
During court proceedings, it was stated that the incidents which allegedly led to Strydom’s death may have occurred between 6 and 8 December. The state opposed Bock’s release, citing the seriousness of the charge, and he was remanded in custody. He is expected to return to court on 14 January for a formal bail application.
Investigation details
It was further revealed in court that Strydom’s body was in an advanced state of decomposition at the time it was discovered. Photographs forming part of the police investigation indicate that her body was wrapped in a sheet and concealed in the bushes.
A source close to the family indicated that police are examining aspects of the relationship between the deceased and the accused as part of the broader investigation.
These matters have not been confirmed by authorities and do not form part of the charge currently before the court.
Police have not confirmed further details and the investigation remains ongoing.
Family’s pain and community response
Outside the courtroom, Strydom’s mother addressed those gathered, describing the family’s grief and noting that her grandson was celebrating his 17th birthday on the day of the accused’s court appearance.
She said Strydom’s four children had spent the festive season without their mother, describing the loss as devastating for the family.
The case has sparked strong reaction within the greater Knysna community. A petition opposing bail has been widely supported, with residents expressing concern for community safety and calling for accountability.
In a statement supporting the petition, community member Haylee Gee said the case highlights the ongoing problem of femicide in South Africa. She urged the court to consider the seriousness of the charge during bail proceedings.
Social media concerns
Residents have also raised concerns about the circulation of photographs of the accused on social media.
Authorities have cautioned that the sharing of images related to an accused person may, in certain circumstances, infringe legal or procedural safeguards and could have legal consequences.
Police emphasised that the judicial process must be allowed to unfold without interference as the investigation continues.
