Update
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Garden Route National Park (GRNP), as a component of SA National Parks (Sanparks), has taken on new tourism safety monitors in a youth development programme funded by the national department of tourism.
These monitors are based in the Knysna, Wilderness and Tsitsikamma sections of the GRNP, and their primary task is to ensure visitors' safety and access to information.
The programme was launched in 2017 in Soweto, Johannesburg and due to its success there, it was subsequently rolled out throughout the country. GRNP manager Paddy Gordon says the programme is one way of preparing young people for the job market. Youth obtain the necessary skills to prepare them for the job market straight after school if they join the programme.
There are a few such programmes within Sanparks that include the employment of young people as environmental monitors and also within biodiversity social programmes.
